Hardware, Software, and Wetware on the Bleeding Edge

Stormdeck One

The Stormdeck One is getting close to complete I think. The 3D printed keyboard plate is much better than the previous acrylic versions since it’s now the right thickness of 1.5mm and the keys no longer have a tendency to fall out. I’m getting used to the keyboard layout. The blank keycaps are making me realise just how much I still seem to subconsciously look at the keys while typing and what keys I use as cues while doing so. Not all of them are present in such a minimal keyboard. My only real complaint is those awful excuses for mouse buttons on the trackpoint module. I don’t know how to choose proper switch caps to make them easier to use yet, and I really badly want to redesign the whole awful mess so that I have not only better button positioning but also only a single USB connection. This will require better 3D CAD skills though.

The innards are a Pine A64-LTS, using the Playbox enclosure and the 7″ LCD panel. That heatsink is one originally intended for M.2 SSDs and after experimenting with several ones it was the first I found that could keep the CPU at a safe 50°C or so at reasonable load and thin enough that I could still close the case. The batteries are Panasonic NCR18650s at 3400 mAh each and should be good for about 10,000 mAh total, for a couple hours of use before recharge.
